Commons:GFDL 1.3 relicensing criteria
Following the conclusion of the Wikimedia licensing update vote, the Wikimedia Foundation has resolved to exercise, as of June 15, 2009, the time-limited relicensing provision included in the GNU Free Documentation License, version 1.3. Under this provision, any content on Wikimedia sites, including Commons, which is licensed under GFDL 1.3 (including "GFDL 1.x or later") and which meets the eligibility criteria set out in the license will also be made available under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 license.
Criteria[edit]
To be eligible for relicensing, a file must meet the following conditions (set out in GFDL 1.3, section 11):
- Must be licensed under the GFDL 1.3 (including e.g. "GFDL 1.2 or any later version", but not including "GFDL 1.2 only").
- Must not be marked as having any "cover texts" or "invariant sections".
- Must have been uploaded to Commons or to some other Wikimedia project before August 1, 2009.
- If first published under the GFDL somewhere other than a Wikimedia project, must have been uploaded to Commons or to some other Wikimedia project before November 1, 2008.
Relicensing[edit]
Any files which satisfy the criteria above may, starting from June 15, 2009, be used under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 license. The pre-existing licenses for such files will remain valid; the files will effectively be multilicensed.
A License Migration Task Force has been created to identify eligible files and, with the help of bots, explicitly tag them as relicensed. Your help is welcome in facilitating this process and in manually tagging files whose eligibility cannot be confirmed by bots. See template:License migration.
