So what can I do with this image?[edit]

So is it ok to create derivative works, e.g. use Photoshop to make it look like that it's on the side of a mug? Like here: Image:Wikipedia mug.jpg kreng

What kind of use is permitted by the copyright holder and what isn't?

-- nyenyec  23:57, 20 July 2005 (UTC)

i see it is listed on the deletion request. so: Template:deletion request Effeietsanders 15:11, 2 September 2005 (UTC)

See Commons:Deletion requests/Archives05#Wikimedia logos for the deletion discussion. By the way, in answer to nyenyec's questions: derivative works are not permitted. No use is permitted. All rights are reserved. User:dbenbenn 19:43, 8 January 2006 (UTC)
Well, according to the author it has been released under the GFDL[1], current statements to the contrary notwithstanding. Matt Crypto 08:41, 3 February 2006 (UTC)
I think the message you want to link is now here [2]. Current license statments seem inconsistent with that, see for example [3]: "Use of the Wikimedia logo is subject to the Wikimedia visual identity guidelines and requires permission." Unfortunate. Goyo - 3 August 2009

Missing accents[edit]

Based on a discussion at en:Talk:Wikipedia. If you compare this image with the logo used on the en.wp main page, there are differences:

This image Main page logo
И
(capital I)
Й
(capital short I)
Ω
(capital Omega)
Ώ
(capital Omega with Tonos)

Thryduulf 12:05, 14 April 2006 (UTC)

I've (independently) noticed that too. All Wikipedia logos except am, ar, de, fa, lt, nn, and sv use Й and Ώ. Also ro has Ă instead of Й. --PuzzletChung 14:58, 25 September 2006 (UTC)

I have made a blank version of this image at Image:Wikipedia-logo-blank.png that does not contain the jigsaw-puzzle characters. -- Karada 13:51, 20 July 2007 (UTC)

Icon link to wikipedia[edit]

Hello,

I want to put an icon link to wikipedia on a website. Is there any icon available for this purpose? As far as I understand the discussion above, it's not allowed to use this picture here, according to the license. --Vodeg 10:17, 27 October 2007 (UTC)

You can use something like Wiki letter w.svg (Image:Wiki letter w.svg), if its license is compatible with your site. Browse Category:W for other images. — Xavier, 12:30, 27 October 2007 (UTC)
Good idea, thank for the hint. --Vodeg 18:03, 27 October 2007 (UTC)

SVG[edit]

I made an svg version of the image here: Image:Wikipedia logo (svg).svg, I hope you like it. -- penubag  07:10, 16 February 2008 (UTC)

Like that one better. --216.54.120.67 aka w:user:Gp75motorsports 18:19, 21 February 2008 (UTC)

Compression[edit]

{{editprotected}} I was able to losslessly compress this image even further, using a combination of PNGOUT, AdvanceCOMP, and DeflOpt. The resulting file is 277362 bytes (~270kb) compared to the current version's 294561 (~288kb). Given the widespread use of this image, I think the extra reduction is warranted. If an administrator agrees, I've temporarily uploaded the image to ImageShack for your convenience. Thanks, Luinfana (talk) 21:58, 16 December 2008 (UTC)

Use inside Wiki[edit]

Can I use this image inside the Wikimedia projects? It is just in my userpage, is it possible? --JJ - Schumi4ever (talk) 11:23, 27 February 2009 (UTC)

License[edit]

Commons:Welcome says "Wikimedia Commons is a media file repository making available public domain and freely-licensed educational media content (images, sound and video clips) to all. It acts as a common repository for the various projects of the Wikimedia Foundation, but you do not need to belong to one of those projects to use media hosted here." (emphasis added by me). The license for this file states "Use of the Wikimedia logo is subject to the Wikimedia visual identity guidelines and requires permission." (emphasis added by me). It is NOT free. Why is it in Commons? --Drundia (talk) 14:08, 8 May 2009 (UTC)

Compression 2[edit]

{{Editprotected}} I optimized this image further: [4] (194 kB compared to 271 kB). This was done using Optipng and then using a hex editor to clean up a few dummy blocks in the PNG file structure. Most of the shrinkage comes from encoding as grayscale rather than RGB channels. This has no visible effect on the image's appearance, as almost all pixels were already absolute shades of gray with R=G=B. There were some pixels of very, very faint RGB noise around one of the jigsaw piece joins on the right-hand side and towards the upper right edge, probably introduced by some edit in the past and not intentional. I also corrected the stray black pixel over the И. I didn't alter its appearance in any other way, such as correcting the wrong characters or cleaning the rest of the mucky edges, so I don't think this is a controversial change. • Anakin (talk) 10:01, 18 November 2009 (UTC)

Favicon[edit]

Would it be possible to make the favicon of the logo transparent? I'm not sure if this should be asked here, but I don't know where to ask for it. Thanks, --Meldor (talk) 19:43, 13 April 2010 (UTC)

I think you should try the Village pump instead or, better, the Administrators' noticeboard. — Xavier, 00:30, 14 April 2010 (UTC)
Thanks! I'll do it now.--Meldor (talk) 08:18, 14 April 2010 (UTC)

Hebrew Character Crooked?[edit]

{{editprotected}} Hi there. I used to know a bit of Hebrew, and when I look at the new logo, I keep thinking that the Hebrew character seems crooked. The longer side should be parallel with the long sides of the character directly above it. For the record, the Hebrew character is two directly below the English "W." If you respond here, please notify me on my en.wikipedia talk page. Thanks, Sven Manguard Talk 04:12, 24 September 2010 (UTC)

Not done This is Wikipedia logo, and this is how it looks, crooked or not. If you would like to change the actual Wikipedia logo, I can’t help with that, you have to request it in some other place, I guess meta:Talk:Wikipedia/Logo or possibly Talk:Wikipedia/2.0 might do. --Mormegil (talk) 18:59, 9 November 2010 (UTC)
Yes, it is crooked in that the vertical line of symmetry in the vav does not follow from the two letters above, and it seems upright with respect to the puzzle piece and not the line of longitude, as it should be. However, I'm not sure what the proper procedure would be to correct it. -- Avi (talk) 00:49, 25 November 2010 (UTC)

— Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.52.21.138 (talk • contribs) 2012-02-18T18:53:07‎ (UTC)
